Pregame Playlist: Anapaula Gutierrez

Every athlete has a go-to playlist that they listen to before they take the field, step on the court, or dive into the pool. In Pregame Playlist we bring Stanford student-athletes' playlists to you!

Before every game, match, or meet, athletes turn to their go-to playlist to get in the zone. In Pregame Playlist, we explore the music that motivates student-athletes and what it means to them. Today, senior Anapaula Gutierrez shares her playlist and how it helps her lock in ahead of the NCAA Regional Championships.

GoStanford.com: What’s your favorite song on this playlist and why?

Anapaula Gutierrez: Another Love is my favorite song of all time. Has been for the past four years. It was with me at my lows and I still listen to it in my highs. Just the way it makes me feel resonates with me. Lots of emotion in that song. I think music is amazing at conveying emotions that words can’t.

GS: Who are your favorite artists these days?

AP: I will always be a Bad Bunny fan, and I’ll never get tired of listening to Billie Eilish. They are my favorite artists because they consistently create music that resonates with me.

GS: What about this playlist gets you ready for competition?

AP: This playlist reminds me of how far I’ve come and what I’m capable of achieving. It’s a mix of songs that not only get me in the right mindset but also have a calming and reassuring effect.

GS: How would you describe your music taste in general?

AP: My playlist is pretty random, I rarely have more than one song from the same artist because I tend to cherry-pick my favorites.

GS: Does this playlist differ from what you listen to normally? If so, how come?

AP: No, it doesn’t really differ. I actually had to start over with a new Spotify account recently, so the playlist I shared is the only one I have right now.

GS: How does your music taste compare to the rest of your team's?

AP: My music taste is definitely more random and leans toward the sadder side, whereas my team is mostly into EDM and more high-energy music.

GS: Describe your relationship with music, and how/if that relates to your sport.

AP: As I mentioned before, when words aren’t enough, music helps me process my emotions and simply feel. It has a way of expressing what I sometimes can’t put into words.
